JASMINE WAN

Jasmine Wan

Jasmine Wan (born 2005, Shanghai, China) is a student filmmaker, photographer, installation artist and curator, currently based in Claremont, California, USA.

Guided by the concept of Saudade, a recollection of feelings that fuses bitter and sweet and bonds filmmakers and audiences, Jasmine uses art to navigate the elusive authentic emotions in memories. The new digital media provided her with exciting opportunities and agencies to create virtual works with astounding effects while exploring their distance from the audience in front of digital screens.

She incorporates step-printing effect into the discotheque scene of her thesis film The Evening Primrose, a dream-like flashback of ecstasy, with the cinematic feel of my street photography Behind the Opera House ushering the viewers into the enigmatic, helpless life of the opera singer.

Yet the tactility of installations evokes in her equally powerful emotions. She uses transparent, malleable materials in her installations The Day, 17520h and Voice of April, representing the soft, translucent, yet impermeable wall between individuals during the pandemic. The physical form of her installations provides a tangible experience in contrast with the intangible digital technology, allowing audiences to interact with them through the glove-like structure.

By experimenting with different mediums to visualize and embody memories, Jasmine explores the tension between the virtuality of film and photography and the tactility of installations, capturing new emotions that transcend past memories, emotions that are alive, vigorous and everlasting.
