Inspired by artist Joan Jonas’ style of incorporating past works in new projects, recurring materials in the installation - shower curtain, polyester, red yarn - draw an intimate connection with the previous works, with a fixed theme on the internal connection with oneself during the time of COVID. The piece featured one of my experimental films Typhoon as a projection, as part of my childhood memories of solitude being reflected onto the quarantine experience, feeling stuck in a closed space where my urge to embrace the outside world can only be fulfilled by artificial crafts.

The Day (2022)

While the pandemic has somewhat receded after its initial rampage, the fear of another virulent bloom has caused the Chinese government to enforce more rounds of draconian lockdowns. While digital communication technology can help us retain a degree of online interaction, there is still a transparent wall between individuals, limiting our physical interaction and exacerbating some mental issues with unregulated usage. Made from plastic shower curtains and gloves, this installation project serves as a physical representation of the wall. Audiences are encouraged to hug each other by interacting with the installation, writing a word or two about how they felt during the pandemic, and empathizing with the community about their unique experiences in the past two years.
